I have been a journalist my entire working life. I started at a small town daily after being honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy as a Radar-man Petty Officer third class. My early years included beat reporting; police, the courts, city, county and state government.
In addition to print media I have done broadcast news for local, national and international outlets, including the Mutual Network, BBC, CBC.
Writing for the American Bar Association Journal I twice won the American Society of Business Press Editors Award for investigative journalism: “The Abello Conspiracy“, detailed the arrest and trial of Jose Abello Silva.
The second award, “Emerging Law In Palestine” included interviews with Palestinian leaders in the occupied territories, Yasser Arafat in Tunis and ranking Israeli Defence Force officers.
I am particularly proud of a third story, “Reasonable Doubts” about Adolph Munson who spent 12 years on Oklahoma’s death row for a murder he didn’t commit. During that investigation I was able to uncover evidence previously withheld by the state. Munson was re-tried and acquitted.
“The Inslaw Octopus” appeared in the premiere issue of WIRED. Dealing with the theft of PROMIS software by government operatives, I confirmed the purloined software was in use by the CIA.
I am a regular writer for The Oklahoma Observer. I am also a contributor to ConsortiumNews. I’ve covered American affairs for the Swiss papers SontagsBlick and Targus Ansagun.
My recent documentary work involves “Life on the Edge” for a Swiss production company about Debra Milke, currently on Arizona’s death row. Milke was convicted of aiding in in the murder of her young son. The only evidence against her was a purported confession obtained by a Phoenix detective who failed to take notes or record the event.
It may appear most of what I have done has been rather serious. But, as an Irish-Catholic-Native Texan, I have found humor to be a steadfast, although at times, elusive companion. I have traveled extensively in the U.S., Asia, Latin America, Mexico and Canada. I have some facility in Spanish, my Canadian wife and daughter speak French. I have no idea what language my post-high school son speaks.
